Recently, I sat down to talk to Paul David Jones about to talk about his career as a Game Artist and his new book Game Artist. Paul Jones has had an outstanding career that has been over decades of in the making. From working with the fledging company at the time Epic Games on Unreal Tournament games, with Lego to make the Lego Games, Warthog to make Battle Star Galactica, Tv shows like Dinotopia, and recently known for and currently working as the Art Director for Cloud Imperium Games, Star Citizen.

When he sat down to write Game Artist, he didn’t know of any books on the career of being a game artist. So, he set to write on to help those who are just starting their career with his experiences. He came up with the five Stages of a Game Artist. Those he personally experienced over the decades of working in the field as a game artist. What are the five stages?

The first phase is the Job Applicant. You search for you first job. The second one is Junior Artist. Your big break into the game art industry. All the hard work has paid off and received your first job They third phase is the Senior Artist. This phase is when you have proven yourself as an artist and have shown your ability to lead others as a supervisor. The fourth phase of the journey is Lead artist. This phase covers the leading teams of artis as a manger of a group of artist and their Senior artist leaders. The fifth and final phase is Art Director. The Art Director is the highest position one person can hold in a game. They set the direction, pace, do the hiring, and many more.

Paul Jones said in his interview that, “The most important position to me is that they are all important in their own right. It like a chain connected end to end.”

Watch the video above for more of the answer.

In conclusion the game artist life is hard, but with a chance of a lot of reward.
